PROBLEM/SOLUTION ESSAY: AIDS IN THE THIRD WORLD
This writing task is designed to follow “AIDS in the Third world; A Global Disaster” off the economist website. The text should be covered with the accompanying reading task before attempting the writing.
Introduction: The introduction should include information concerning what AIDS is, how it kills, where it started and how it spreads. The following thesis statement should be added to the end of the development:
Thesis statement: Dealing with the problem of AIDS involves both certain measures to be taken to prevent the spread of the disease and treatment options.
First developmental paragraph: The following topic sentence should be placed at the beginning of the paragraph and support should be provided
Topic sentence: In the case of AIDS, prevention is as important, if not more important, than cure.
Discuss the importance of education and the role of not only the state, but also the media, the clergy and other well-respected public figures in enlightening the public and encouraging the use of condoms. You may refer to the text and the successful campaign implemented by Uganda for example. Medical safeguards such as screening all blood products should also be mentioned in this paragraph.
Second developmental paragraph:  Use the following topic sentence and provide suitable support.
Topic sentence: Providing treatment or at least palliative care is also vital.
Discuss the importance of making antiretroviral drugs readily available and cheaper, removing the stigma concerning AIDS, providing support and psychological help
