MICROAGGRESSIONS MATTER KEY AND TEACHER’S NOTES
This text tackles a serious but often trivialized problem: microaggression and its implications. It also provides reasons why it should be taken seriously. There are a lot of people who have encountered micro aggression but may not know that there is a word to describe it. Hopefully, this activity will provide a good learning opportunity in more senses than one.
1.       They do not necessarily reflect malicious intent
2.       Had no effect on the impact
3.       Exercising vigilance in interacting with those whose lived experiences are different than our own
4.       Because microaggressions point out cultural difference in ways that put the recipient’s non-conformity in sharp relief
5.       Imposter syndrome or stereotype threat
6.       Creating victims and evangelizing a new kind of moral righteousness
7.       More complex views of the world, empathy
8.       An acknowledgement of that person’s innermost identity (conferring both respect and dignity)
9.       Oppression and social marginalization; their strength or inner worth
10.   He wouldn’t; because he would see Oberlin as the archetype of a malignant victimhood culture
11.   Wish to solve the problem
12.   People like to make a fuss and people should not be touchy
13.   They expose the internalized prejudices that lurk beneath the veneer of our carefully curated public selves / OR: They are linked to implicit biases

NEOLIBERALISM HAS BROUGHT OUT THE WORST IN US

“An economic system that rewards psychopathic personality traits has changed our ethics and our personality. We are forever told that we are freer to choose the course of our lives than ever before, but the freedom to choose outside the success narrative is limited”
By: Paul Verhaeghe

Thanks are due to my friend and colleague Valerie Needham for this wonderful text
BEFORE YOU READ
Watch the following videos and take notes to get an idea of the focus of the reading task:
QUESTIONS
1.       It is stated in the first paragraph of the article that “thirty years of neoliberalism, free-market forces and privatization have taken their toll”. What is the toll they have taken?
2.       Read the last sentence of paragraph one and state clearly what its function is. Then state clearly what type of article you are about to read: argumentative, advantages and disadvantages, cause and effect, problem solution, narrative or descriptive.
3.       The ability to speak well and make contact with people is important in the modern world to remain psychologically healthy / to be able to socialize / to make the right contacts / to win.
4.       What personality trait seems to have lost its importance in the modern world? Mark the answer that doesn’t fit: honesty/ trustworthiness/ uprightness / deception /sincerity.
5.       Being quick off the mark is good in theory but one has to remember that one can lose big as well as win. Would the modern man described in the text heed this advice? Why or why not?
6.        Which sentence best expresses the main idea of the paragraph beginning “This description is, of course…”?
·         In the modern business world, loyalty is out and profit is in

12.   The arguments encompassed by neoliberal meritocracy can best be described as a……………………………………………………………………………..
13.   According to the writer, freedoms in the modern world are due to……………………..
14.   The fact that so many human activities and products are closely regulated proves that we are not as free as we think / we are not as powerful as we think / we are not bureaucratic as we think/ we are not as significant as we think. Mark the wrong answer.
15.   In the modern world the concept of success is / isn’t relative.
16.   Refer back to question 2 and then read the last paragraph of the text. Revise your answer to question 2 if you need to. Now state clearly how the last paragraph fits in with your answer.
WRITING TASK
Write an essay in which you discuss to what extent you agree with the following statement by Zygmunt Bauman: “Never have we been so free. Never have we been so powerless”

NEOLIBERALISM HAS BROUGHT OUT THE WORST IN US KEY AND TEACHER’S NOTES
This sad yet topical text has given me the opportunity to write questions concerning drawing conclusions, finding main ideas and relationships of cause and effect. There is also plenty of paraphrasing and vocabulary practice. The writing task should not require any additional guidance.
1.       It has had a profound effect not only on our values but also on our personalities
2.       It is the topic sentence; argumentative
3.       To make the right contacts
4.       Deception
5.       No; it won’t be him who picks up the pieces
6.       The first
7.       Because there is a buried sense of fear, ranging from performance anxiety to a broader social fear of the threatening other.
8.       Infants or children; squabbling ( only this word refers to the fighting of children)
9.       Recognition from others
10.   We are reinforcing privilege and putting increasing pressure on overstretched and exhausted citizens
11.   One, a single
12.    A fairytale (of unrestricted choice)
13.   Indifference
14.   We are not as bureaucratic as we think
15.   Isn’t
16.   It is a typical conclusion for an argumentative essay: the ideas hinted at in the introduction and discussed in the development are paraphrased here

AUTISM’S HIDDEN GIFTS

“There is a popular misconception that autistic people are either anti-social tech geniuses or Rain Man-like savants. But research is increasingly showing that even “low-functioning” autistic people might be smarter than neurotypical people in certain ways”
By: Olga Kazan
Level of difficulty: ***
BEFORE YOU READ
You need to understand what autism is before you tackle the text so access the videos below, watch and listen:
·         “What is autism?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4G0HTIUBlI
·         “Ask an autistic – what is autism?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vju1EbVVgP8
QUESTIONS
1.       The story of John and Michael and similar instances should not lead to the conclusion that……….
2.       The case of Daniel Temmet is proof that some autistic people may……………………………………………..
3.       The autistic tech genius’ success with the venture capitalist is due to his lack of planning / stage fright / emotion / language skills
4.       Why are autistic people able to understand numbers and patterns better?
5.       The reason why autistic people are better than normal people at processing complex patterns is the fact that...........................................................................................................................
6.       Why does Mottron work with Michelle Dawson?
7.       Access the video of the autistic reporter and watch it: http://www.theonion.com/video/autistic-reporter-train-thankfully-unharmed-in-cra-20098 . What feature of autistic people does the video highlight?
8.       Read Mattron’s experiment on creativity to the end. The major difference between the neurotypical subjects and the autistic subjects was the fact that the former suggested……………first while the latter went straight for ……………….
9.       Read the statements below. Then, access the podcast titled “NeuroTribes examines the history and myths of the autistic spectrum” http://www.npr.org/player/v2/mediaPlayer.html?action=1&t=1&islist=false&id=436742377&m=436940063   ( you can also access the podcast by via the text which has a link; http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/09/autism-hidden-advantages/406180/ )
Are statements true or false according to the podcast?
·         Both autistic people and neurotypical people have their strengths and weaknesses
·         Not all autistic people are the same
·         Doctor Asberger made no effort to save his patients from the Nazis
·         The terms “high functioning” and low functioning” are derived from a presentation
·         Dr. Asberger said that the children could be very useful
·         Not everything that steps out of line is superior
·         Asberger framed autism more broadly than Connor
·         Connor believed nurture was to blame for autism
·         Connor saw autism as a psychiatric disorder
·         There was a sharp rise in the number of cases of autism in the 1970’s
·         The Rain Man character developed cultural awareness of autism

·         There should be more focus on making the lives of autistic people better and happier
10.   Write down the first sentence of the conclusion of the text.
WRITING TASK
What is autism?
Use all the information you have gleaned to write an essay describing autism to someone who knows nothing about it.
AUTISM’S HIDDEN GIFTS KEY AND TEACHER’S NOTES
This reading and listening into writing activity introduces a problem which many may have preconceptions about. The listening tasks have been integrated into the questions this time round to emulate the way an individual would read a text on line. The podcast is excellent both interms of quality of English and enunciation and content.
1.       When autistic people are unusually skilled, those skills are impractical and not connected to real intellect.
2.       Possess extraordinary abilities yet function at a high level
3.       Emotion
4.       Because the autistic brain seeks out the kind of information it “prefers” to process while ignoring materials –like verbal and social cues for example – that it doesn’t like
5.       People with autism concentrate more of their brain’s resources on visual processing and less on tasks like planning and impulse control
6.       Because autistic people have excellent memories (She has an excellent memory won’t do on its own; you have to state that she is autistic)
7.       The fact that they are precocious at technical and visual tasks
8.       The easy answers / ingenious responses ( innovative uses although meaning wise alright doesn’t fit the logic of the sentence as well.)
9.       1. T, 2. T, 3. F, 4. T, 5. T, 6. F, 7. F, 8. F, 9. T, 10. F, 11.  T, 12 T, 13. T, 14. T, 15. F, 16. T

10.    This isn’t to suggest that the parents of severely autistic children – some of whom are prone to tantrums and violence – don’t face real challenges.
